During Michael Jackson’s Bad tour, from roughly 1987-1989, he traded his trademark Aviators for the Ray Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. He was rarely seen without these spiffy shades throughout the entire tour. No Michael Jackson outfit would be complete without either. But if you are wearing a Bad-era costume, go with the Wayfarers.

Did you happen to notice that the traditional “Ray Ban” logo was not on Michael’s Wayfarers, but rather a simple silver diamond. We probably could have guessed that it wouldn’t be the regular Wayfarers. Do you remember when he surprised Arsenio Hall and Eddie Murphy on the Arsenio Hall show?–wearing his Wayfarers, of course!

No Michael Jackson outfit would be complete without his trademark aviator sunglasses. He began wearing them in the 1980′s and even wore them when he met President Ronald Regan and his wife, Nancy, in the White House. The President and the First Lady were thanking him for donating his song, Beat It, for use in the drunk driving prevention commercials.

Who could forget Michaels’s awe inspiring performance at the halftime show at the 1993 Super Bowl at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California? With fireworks lighting up the field, Jackson was catapulted onto the stage. As he landed, he maintained a motionless “clenched fist, standing statue stance”, dressed in a gold and black military outfit and sunglasses. He remained completely motionless for several minutes and the crowd went wild. He then slowly removed his aviators threw them away and began to sing and dance. He sang and danced to four songs: “Jam“, “Billie Jean“, “Black or White” and “Heal the World“. It was the first Super Bowl where the audience figures actually increased during the half-time show, and was viewed by 135 million Americans alone.

Setting off a huge trend, Jackson wore just one bedazzled glove to the 1984 Grammys along with a sequined Military Printed Jacket, complete with gilded sash. Not only did he get fashionistas buzzing, he also picked up a record-breaking eight awards that night. Jackson was really into “British regalia show clothes – over the top military themed items,” says longtime costumer Michael Bush, who would research historically correct military gear for Jackson, and then “do a street version, rock and roll look out of plastic, vinyl. Anything other than what was traditional!” We love the style and think you would look great in this Michael Jackson Costume!!

The men responsible for the extreme, but stylish wardrobe, were L.A.-based costume designers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins. They quietly designed most of Jackson’s personal and concert tour wardrobes — tens of thousands of pieces, many with military details — working from a Michael mannequin in their studio that was built to Michael’s exact measurements. The King of Pop’s directive was always, “This is what the world’s wearing — top it.” And did they ever! One jacket — worn in a 1990 L.A. Gear ad campaign — was black suede and covered in miniature gold license plates.

Yes, we all have a vivid mind picture of the black fedora, the white socks and loafers or the red leather jacket, but the solitary glove — made famous in the music video for “Billie Jean” — became a Jackson trademark. He was dubbed “The Gloved One,” by media and a sequined glove he wore during his 1984 Victory tour sold for more than $49,000 in a recent auction.

But what about the socks? That idea came from Fred Astaire, who told Michael to wear light colored socks to draw attention to his feet. It worked. It was Mr. Astaire who supposedly called Michael to tell him how much he loved the moonwalk was after seeing Michael perform it for the first time.

You know Michael was rarely seen without his signature Ray Ban shades…In case you want to duplicate the look, the two models for which he is known are the Ray-Ban RB 3025 Aviator (Large) sunglasses and the Ray Ban ORIGINAL WAYFARER 2140 Mens Sunglasses.

When Rod Temperton wrote the song “Thriller”, he originally wanted to call it “Starlight” or “Midnight Man” but settled on “Thriller” because he felt the name had merchandising potential. Despite the positive response of the Thriller album, the title track came under strong criticism. Rolling Stone expressed a negative sentiment, criticizing its “degenerat[ion] into silly camp”. The magazine expressed confusion at the use of Vincent Price over Count Floyd for the track’s concluding rap. The 14-minute video is regarded by MTV as the greatest music video of all-time, and the song itself is considered to be one of Jackson’s signature songs.

Here are the lyrics to Thriller so you can sing along with the video. Check out the moves.

The lyrics of “Beat It” are about defeat and courage, and have been described as a “sad commentary on human nature”. The line “don’t be a macho man” is said to express Jackson’s dislike of violence, while also referencing the childhood abuse he faced at the hands of his father, Joseph. When initially contacted by producer Quincy Jones to play the distinct guitar solo, rock guitarist Eddie Van Halen thought he was receiving a prank call. Turns out he decided to play the part free of charge!

Billie Jean was written by Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones for Michael’s sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Jones originally hated the song and the track was almost removed from the album after he and Jackson had numerous disagreements. The song is well known for its distinctive bass line and Jackson’s vocal hiccups. The song was mixed 91 times before it was finalized.

The song’s lyrics refer to a real-life experience, in which a mentally ill female fan claimed that Jackson had fathered one of her twins. “Billie Jean” was derived from a real life experience the Michael faced in 1981. Apparently a young woman wrote a letter to Jackson, informing the singer that he was the father of one of her twins. Michael, who regularly received letters of this kind, had never met the woman in question and ignored it. The woman sent more letters to Michael claiming that she loved him and wanted to be with him. She wrote of how happy they would be, bringing up the child together. She pondered how Jackson could ignore his own flesh and blood. The letters disturbed the singer to the extent that he suffered nightmares.

Following the letters, Jackson received a parcel containing a photograph of the fan, as well as a letter and a gun. Jackson was horrified—the letter asked that the pop star kill himself on a certain day and at a specific time. The fan would do the same once she had killed their baby. She wrote that if they could not be together in this life, then they would be in the next. To his mother’s dismay, Jackson had the photograph framed and hung above the dining room table of their family home. Afterward, the Jacksons discovered that the female fan had been sent to a psychiatric hospital. How weird is that?

This Michael Jackson Bad Costume includes: A jammin’ jacket featuring signature king of pop style buckles and zipper details, stylized pants with crimson stripe down the right side and multiple buckle embellishments, buckled shoe covers, and a bracelet. Bad gloves with faux leather straps and wide studded gold belt are also included in this retro rockstar’s too cool look. We love it!

Did you know that the song, “Bad”, was originally intended as a duet with longtime rival Prince? Quincy Jones, in an interview included in the special edition of Bad, said that Prince told Jackson and him that he had not wanted to participate because “it would be a hit without (him)”.

In his 1988 autobiography Moonwalk, Jackson wrote: ‘Bad’ is a song about the street. It’s about this kid from a bad neighborhood who gets to go away to a private school. He comes back to the old neighborhood when he’s on a break from school and the kids from the neighborhood start giving him trouble. He sings, ‘I’m bad, you’re bad, who’s bad, who’s the best?’ He’s saying when you’re strong and good, then you’re bad.” In a 1988 interview to Ebony and Jet magazines released on Hulu shortly after his death, Jackson said he got the idea from a true story. “This kid who went to school upstate [New York], in the country, whatever, who is from the ghetto and he tried to make something of his life and he would leave all his friends behind and when he came back, on spring break or whatever, his friends became so envious, jealous of him they killed him. But in the film [Bad's music video] I don’t die of course. So it was a true story that was…we had taken from Time or Newsweek magazine, and he’s a black kid like me and…it’s a sad story.”
