Michael Jackson Costumes — Military Jacket

Setting off a huge trend, Jackson wore just one bedazzled glove to the 1984 Grammys along with a sequined Military Printed Jacket, complete with gilded sash. Not only did he get fashionistas buzzing, he also picked up a record-breaking eight awards that night. Jackson was really into “British regalia show clothes – over the top military themed items,” says longtime costumer Michael Bush, who would research historically correct military gear for Jackson, and then “do a street version, rock and roll look out of plastic, vinyl. Anything other than what was traditional!” We love the style and think you would look great in this Michael Jackson Costume!!

The men responsible for the extreme, but stylish wardrobe, were L.A.-based costume designers Michael Bush and Dennis Tompkins. They quietly designed most of Jackson’s personal and concert tour wardrobes — tens of thousands of pieces, many with military details — working from a Michael mannequin in their studio that was built to Michael’s exact measurements. The King of Pop’s directive was always, “This is what the world’s wearing — top it.” And did they ever! One jacket — worn in a 1990 L.A. Gear ad campaign — was black suede and covered in miniature gold license plates.
